The Tree Stumps were a band from Fairview Park/Parma, Ohio, active from 1963 to 1968. In the fall of 1966, they recorded their first songs, "Listen to Love" and "Jennie Lee," with the support of their manager Vance Johns, who was also Courtney's father. The recordings took place at Cleveland Recording, with "Listen to Love" intended as the A-side. While it was a strong pop song, "Jennie Lee" gained more airplay and recognition among collectors. The record was released with a one-sided picture sleeve and sold out its initial pressing of 1,000 copies, leading to a second pressing without the sleeve. Notably, the record's number, 20013, corresponded to the street number of the Johns household on Lake Road in Rocky River.
