The Turfits were a band from Fremont, Ohio, active between 1964 and 1968. Originally called The American Way, the lineup included Gary Reddick on organ, Roger Hilty on drums, Kenny Turner on bass, and Bob Peeler on lead guitar. In July 1966, Whitey Gwinup left the Vandaliers to replace Bob Peeler as the lead guitarist, after which the band changed their name to the Other Ones. While performing at Club 224 in Tiffin, they held a name contest and ultimately chose The Turfits as the new name. In 1967, they recorded two songs for Capitol: "Losin One," written by Gwinup, and "If It's Love You Want," co-written by Gwinup and Harry Kerr. The latter song had originally been recorded by The Vandaliers in 1965, but Gwinup re-recorded it with The Turfits.
