The Turtles were an American psychedelic folk/rock band known for their pop sensibilities. Formed in 1965, the band broke up in 1971. They experienced lineup changes, with members leaving after their third album and later joining other projects. During the '70s, they were also recognized as producers. Founders Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman had previously played in several school bands together in California before establishing The Turtles, originally named The Tyrtles as a phonetic joke. By the time they gained significant recognition, they had changed the spelling of their name from "Tyrtles" to "Turtles."
