The Uhuru Dance Band is a highlife band from Ghana, formed by members of the Broadway Dance Band. The name "Uhuru," which means "freedom" in Swahili, was given by Nana Kobina Nketsia Essikadohene, reflecting the sentiment surrounding Ghana's independence in 1957. Shortly after the band's formation, Sammy Obot left for Nigeria, and Stan Plange took over as the leader. Other members of the band included Bob Yoko, George Amissah, Max Hammond, Loughty Lasisi Amao, Duke Duker, Tom Addo, Kpakpo Addo, Darko ‘Patato’ Adams, Mac Tontoh, and the lady vocalist, Charlotte Dada.
