The Ultimates were a 1970s soul group hailing from Columbus, Ohio. They formed following the tragic deaths of Ray Railey and Alvin Freeman from the CVS outfit, which included remaining members Donnie Scales, Earl Railey (Ray's brother), and Jimmy Radford. The CVS label was associated with Clarke, Venieriee & Smith, with Arthur Venieriee serving as one of the original managers and Joseph Peppy Smith as a buyer and marketing representative at J & R Music World. After the loss of Railey and Freeman, the surviving members brought in Nate (Nathanial) Hayden and another member whose name has been forgotten to establish The Ultimates. The group recorded in New York, completing a session of tracks that appeared on their album "You’re My Lady." After this session, they left New York, and Clarke had no control over the group or their subsequent work, except for the initial recording. The Ultimates reportedly completed one additional recording after losing touch with Clarke, but the name under which they recorded remains unknown.
