The Undertones are a rock band formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1975. They gained prominence with their debut EP, "Teenage Kicks," released in September 1978 by Belfast record shop owner Terry Hooley on his Good Vibrations label. The song caught the attention of Britain's top DJ, who played it on his radio show, leading to a record deal that resulted in the band's debut LP released in April 1979. The Undertones earned recognition as a support act on the Clash's American tour that autumn. Their second LP, "Hypnotised," was released in 1980, followed by their first LP for EMI, "Positive Touch," in 1981. The band released "The Sin Of Pride" in 1983 before splitting up that summer after a series of festival gigs. Lead singer Feargal Sharkey pursued a brief solo career, while the O'Neills formed a politically charged band that received critical acclaim but limited commercial success. Attempts to reunite the original lineup for John Peel's 50th birthday in 1989 fell through due to the death of the O'Neills' father. In September 2003, The Undertones released their first new album in 20 years, "Get What You Need," featuring new singer Paul McLoone in place of Feargal Sharkey.
