The Variations were a soul group from Oakland, California, active during the 1970s and 1980s. Notably, their history includes a significant event involving the song "Papa Was A Rolling Stone," which was originally set for release as a 45rpm single in 1973 under People Records (PE 628). However, the release was cancelled due to contractual issues with The Variations, who later recorded their vocal track in a subsequent session. Ultimately, the song found its way to Amour Records.
