The Vaselines were formed in Edinburgh in 1987 by singers and guitarists Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, later joined by Kelly's brother Charles on drums and James Seenan on bass. They signed to Stephan Pastel's 53rd and 3rd label, and their debut single, "Son of a Gun," was released in 1987. A year later, they followed up with "Dying for It," featuring viola player Sophie Pragnell, which highlighted their influence from the Velvet Underground. However, the dissolution of 53rd and 3rd led to the band's breakup, coinciding with the release of their only studio album, 1989's Dum Dum, via Rough Trade. The original lineup briefly reunited in 1990 to open for Nirvana in Edinburgh, who later covered their songs "Molly's Lips," "Son of a Gun," and performed "Jesus Doesn't Want Me for a Sunbeam" during their famous MTV Unplugged performance. This exposure sparked renewed interest in the Vaselines, culminating in the 1992 release of The Way of the Vaselines, which compiled all 19 of their official recordings. After the band, Eugene Kelly went on to lead Captain America (later renamed Eugenius), while Frances McKee took a break from the music scene before returning with the project Suckle.
