The Velvet Monkeys, formed in Washington, D.C. after the breakup of their previous band Citizen 23 in 1981, consisted of guitarist/vocalist Don Fleming, keyboardist Elaine Barnes, and bassist Stephen Soles, with drummer Jay Spiegel joining shortly thereafter. Don Fleming remained the group's sole constant member throughout its decade-long existence. The band released their debut album, Everything is Right, in 1982, followed by Future in 1983 and Rake in 1990. Over the years, numerous musicians passed through the band during its lifetime.
