The Velvets were a soul and doo-wop vocal group formed in 1960 in Texas. The group consisted of Clarence Rigsby (tenor), Robert Thursby (tenor), William Solomon (baritone), and Mark Prince (bass). Their formation came about when a teacher of eighth-grade English at Blackshear Junior High School in Odessa, Texas, heard some of his students harmonizing. They were introduced to the music scene and signed to a label by a fellow Texan.
