The Vibrations were an African-American soul vocal group from Los Angeles, California, active from the mid-1950s until 1976. The group, originally known as The Jay Hawks, achieved their first hit in 1956 with "Stranded in the Jungle" (US #18). After some lineup changes, they found success again in 1961 with "The Watusi" (US #25) and simultaneously had a hit as The Marathons with "Peanut Butter" (#20). The Vibrations recorded several Northern Soul classics, including a cover of "My Girl Sloopy," which was retitled "Hang On, Sloopy" and became a hit for the McCoys in 1965. The group briefly disbanded in 1971, during which time member Ricky Owens joined The Temptations but was let go after a few performances. The remaining members regrouped and continued performing, eventually transitioning into a nightclub act in the mid-1970s before officially dissolving in 1976. Ricky Owens passed away in 1996, while Carl Fisher continues to reside in Los Angeles, where he remains active in singing and songwriting.
