The Wailers are a Jamaican reggae and ska group that was formed in 1963 as a vocal band known as The Wailin' Wailers. The original members included Ermine 'Cherry Smith' Bramwell, among others. The group became known as The Wailers when Bob Marley took over as the lead after Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer left in 1974. Although some productions from 1970 and 1971 credited them as The Wailers, they were still referred to as the backing band for Marley. Following Bob Marley's death in 1981, the group collaborated with various artists and some members went on to release their own records and tour under the name The Wailers, which first appeared in 1989 on an album.
