The Wailing Souls are a Jamaican reggae vocal group originally formed in the late 1960s, consisting of Winston 'Pipe' Matthews, Lloyd 'Bread' McDonald, and George 'Buddy' Haye. Initially known as the Renegades, this lineup recorded backing vocals for an Ernest Ranglin album before disbanding in 1968. Following this, 'Pipe' and 'Bread' teamed up with Oswald Downer and Norman Davis, recording a number of singles at Coxsone Dodd's Studio One label, where they were also known as the Classics. In the early 1970s, the group recorded for Bob Marley's Tuff Gong label under the name Pipe and The Pipers. Their vocal strength and songwriting skills kept them relevant, and in 1974, the lineup changed again with Downer and Davis leaving and 'Buddy' Haye rejoining. The group then entered a new phase working with producer "Jo Jo" Hookim at Channel One label. In 1977, they established their own label, Massive. By the early 1980s, the quartet, now including Rudolph ‘Garth’ Dennis from Black Uhuru, collaborated with several prominent producers, including Sly and Robbie, "Junjo" Lawes, and Linval Thompson.
