**The Ways and Means Biography** The Ways and Means is an English band from Kent that originally formed in 1963 as The Others. The initial lineup included rhythm guitarist and drummer Dave Legge, lead guitarist Terry Silk, and bass player Tony Allison, who were former members of a local band called The Swinging Secrets. They were among the few bands at the time playing surf music and built a solid following while performing in South Coast clubs and halls. In 1965, the band won a competition that awarded them a recording contract with EMI. They released their debut single, "Little Deuce Coupe" b/w "Little Old Lady From Pasadena" on the EMI subsidiary Columbia, featuring Tony Allison on lead vocals. Shortly after, the band changed their name to The Ways and Means. Despite the release, the single did not achieve commercial success, leading to the departure of lead guitarist Bruce Finns, who was replaced by Les Stankovich. The band later performed in Germany and was introduced to manager Ron Fairway, who had previously discovered another band but was pushed out in a power struggle. Fairway managed to get The Ways and Means signed and they recorded a single, which included "Make the Radio a Little Louder," released in 1966. Although the record did not chart, it reached no. 41 on the Radio Caroline charts for the week beginning January 21, 1967, and charted on other stations as well.
