The Wirtschaftswunder was a German band active from 1980 to 1984, featuring musicians Angelo Galizia (vocals, Italy), Tom Dokoupil (guitar, Czechoslovakia), Mark Pfurtscheller (keyboards, Canada), and Jürgen Beuth (drums, Germany). They were part of the Neue Deutsche Welle movement, which emerged alongside the English new wave and post-punk movements in the early 1980s, alongside bands like D.A.F, Malaria!, and ZK. The band gained national attention with their single "Der Kommissar," inspired by the theme music from the 1960s German TV series of the same name, and released their first album, "Salmobray," in 1981. A distinctive aspect of their music was Galizia's singing, which featured a heavy Italian accent. After signing with Deutsche Grammophon, they released their second album, "The Wirtschaftswunder," which was less experimental than their debut. Following their fourth album, "Pop Adenauer," released in the same year, and their final single in 1984, the band dissolved. Dokoupil moved to Cologne, while the remaining members continued to release one album and one single in 1985. The name "Wirtschaftswunder," which translates to "economic miracle," refers to the rapid economic recovery and development of West Germany and Austria after World War II.
