The Yardbirds were a British rock band formed in London in 1963, known for their exploration of blues, rhythm and blues, and rock music. The original lineup consisted of Keith Relf on vocals and harmonica, Paul Samwell-Smith on bass, Chris Dreja on rhythm guitar and later bass, and Jim McCarty on drums. A defining characteristic of the band was its revolving lineup of lead guitarists, starting with Eric Clapton in 1963, followed by Jeff Beck (1963-1965), Jimmy Page (1965-1966), and finally, Jeff Beck again (1966-1968). Their innovative approach to music significantly influenced the development of hard rock and psychedelic rock genres. The Yardbirds were known for their high-energy performances and popularized the "rave-up" style, where a song builds in tempo and intensity, a technique that later influenced heavy metal. In 1992, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as performers and continued to tour under the leadership of Jim McCarty, featuring a constantly evolving lineup. The band created by Todd Rundgren, also known as The Nazz, named their group after The Yardbirds' song "The Nazz Are Blue."
