Thelonious Monk was an American jazz pianist and composer, born on October 10, 1917, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, USA. He passed away on February 17, 1982, in Weehawken, New Jersey, at the age of 64. Monk was a performer known for his idiosyncratic improvisational style and made significant contributions to the standard jazz repertoire, being the most recorded composer in the genre after an unspecified artist. He is often regarded as one of the founders of bebop. Monk's compositions and improvisations featured dissonant harmonies and angular melodic twists, characterized by a highly percussive attack, abrupt use of silence, and dramatic pauses. In addition to his musical talents, Monk was known for his distinct fashion sense, often seen in stylish suits, hats, and trademark sunglasses. He had an unconventional stage presence, frequently getting up from the piano to dance, sometimes in a counter-clockwise motion, drawing comparisons to ring-shout and Muslim Sufi whirling.
