Third Ear Band was a British experimental rock and folk cross-culture band that emerged from the London underground scene in the late 1960s. The group originated from two bands: the duo Giant Sun Trolley, consisting of Glen Sweeney (percussion) and Dave Tomlin (guitar, violin, voice), and Hydrogen Jukebox, which included Glen Sweeney (percussion), Barry Edgar Pilcher (sax), Dick Dadem (trombone), and Clive Kingsley (guitar). Formed around 1967/68, Third Ear Band initially started as a psychedelic rock and jazz group, though no recordings from this period are known. After a concert at the Middle Earth Club in July 1969, where much of their equipment was stolen, the guitarist decided to leave, but the remaining members chose to continue. They redefined their sound and formed an all-acoustic ensemble featuring hand drums, violin/viola, oboe/recorder, and cello. Known for their unique style, Third Ear Band became the most unconventional act on the Harvest label and gained recognition from DJ John Peel. They pioneered a new genre of instrumental music that blended medieval influences with Eastern ethnic elements and avant-garde aesthetics.
