This Mortal Coil was a musical project that functioned as a "supergroup," recording three albums and several other tracks between 1983 and 1991. The project was primarily led by 4AD label head and renowned producer Ivo Watts-Russell, although many vocalists and musicians from both 4AD and non-4AD groups contributed at various times throughout its existence. Following the release of their final album, "Blood," in 1991, the project was retired. However, in 1998, Ivo revisited the concept with a similar collective. The name "This Mortal Coil" is derived from a quote in Shakespeare's Hamlet, which was also referenced in the "Dead Parrot sketch" from Monty Python's Flying Circus.
