Thomas Brinkmann, born in 1959 in Mönchengladbach, is a Cologne-based German producer known for his minimal music, which encompasses elements of techno, dub, and ambient. He has been influenced by various bands and genres, including funk, soul, and rare grooves, which have shaped his artistic output. Brinkmann learned to play drums and began experimenting with music as early as 1978, converting records into manually programmable sequencers by carving notches to create endless grooves on vinyl. In the second half of the 1980s, he worked in design before moving to France and Italy, where he became increasingly involved in visual art. He later returned to Germany, studying at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under Jannis Konnellis and Oswald Wiener, although he was expelled in 1996, resulting in a protracted legal dispute. In 1997, Brinkmann gained recognition in the techno scene with his innovative work using a modified record player equipped with a dual tonearm.
