Thomas Köner, born in 1965 in Germany, is a sound artist and composer who studied electronic music at the Music college in Dortmund and the CEM-Studio in Arnhem. He worked as a sound engineer in film until 1994 and received the "New Media Prize" at the Montreal International Festival New Cinema New Media in 2000. Köner's early work focused on sound research, where he avoided rhythm and melody in favor of exploring sound color. He collaborated with film artists and performed live music for silent films at the Louvre Museum in Paris. His interest in merging visual and auditory experiences led him to installation work, including the piece "List Of Japanese Winds," created with Max Eastley for the Hayward Gallery in London. Köner also contributed sound works for installations at the Centre Georges Pompidou alongside filmmakers. His exploration of sound design extends into club culture, where he sees an opportunity for immersive listening experiences. As a collaborator in progressive techno, he gained recognition and received remix commissions for artists like Nine Inch Nails and created a remix of Claude Debussy for Universal Music.
