Thompson Twins, named after the detectives Thomson and Thompson from the Tintin comics, was formed in 1977 in Sheffield by two guitarists and a drummer who joined soon after some line-up changes. They moved to London and self-released their debut single "Squares And Triangles" in 1980. Following their 1981 debut album, they expanded their lineup by recruiting a bassist, a New Zealand saxophonist, and a percussionist, forming a septet. After completing their second album, "Set," two members left to form a short-lived act, while another departed to pursue a career as a session musician. As a trio, Thompson Twins achieved commercial success with their album "Into The Gap," which produced five singles and helped them break into the American market. Joe Leeway went solo in May 1986, and the band continued as a duo, releasing three more albums. In total, they released eight albums. In 1993, Bailey and Currie began an electronic project.
