Throwing Muses is an American indie rock band founded in 1981 in Newport, Rhode Island, by step-sisters Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donnelly. The original lineup included bassist Elaine Adamedes and drummer Becca Blumen, who was replaced by David Narcizo before the release of their first single in 1984. By the time they released their first album on cassette in 1985, Leslie Langston had taken over on bass. The band signed with 4AD, becoming the first American band to do so, and recorded three albums before Leslie left in 1990, with Fred Abong stepping in for "The Real Ramona." In 1991, Tanya departed to form another band, bringing Fred with her. Kristin then continued Throwing Muses as a three-piece, with Bernard Georges replacing Fred, and they released three more albums for 4AD: "Red Heaven," "University," and "Limbo," before disbanding in 1997 due to financial reasons. Kristin focused on her solo career until 2003 when the band returned with a self-titled album featuring Tanya Donnelly on backing vocals for five songs. Kristin continued her solo work alongside Throwing Muses. A decade later, they released another album, "Purgatory/Paradise," with Tanya supporting the band on tour. The band released two more albums, "Sun Racket" in 2020 and "Moonlight Concessions" in 202
