Tiberih Tesfahunegn, also known as Tebereh Tesfahunegn, was born in Asmara, Eritrea, in 1947. At the age of 11, she was inspired to become a musician after witnessing a concert by Bezunesh Bekele and Tilahun Gessesse. In 1963, she joined the Association of the Asmara Theatre, which included notable members such as Ato Atowebrhan Seghid and Tewelde Redda. Her brother, Eyasu Tesfahuney, is also a successful musician. Tesfahuney achieved her biggest hit in the mid-1960s with “Tegezana Abi Hedmo” (Our Lovely House), a song that criticized Ethiopia's occupation and was subsequently banned. This led her to flee to Sweden in 1970, although her stay there lasted only a few years. In 1975, she returned to Eritrea and joined the Eritrean People’s Liberation Front (EPLF). During a battle in Adi Hawesh two years later, she suffered an injury that left her deaf in her left ear due to shrapnel from an RPG. The EPLF sent her to Sudan for recovery, and in 1985, she was sent to Germany for treatment. She remained there until 1994, when she returned to Eritrea.
