Tim Maia was a Brazilian guitarist and singer, born on September 28, 1942, in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He is recognized as the father of Brazilian soul music and made significant contributions to the music scene in Brazil by introducing modern black music from the United States to national pop music. Maia skillfully linked funk, samba, and baião, bringing soul closer to bossa nova and paving the way for new musical forms that were distinctively Brazilian, rather than Tropicalist, MPB, or rock n' roll. In 1974, he founded the first independent music label in Brazil, named after his initials: Sebastião Rodrigues Maia. Throughout his career, many of his songs have been recorded by various artists. He was the adoptive father of singer/songwriter and the father of another child, as well as the uncle of a singer/producer. Tim Maia passed away on March 15, 1998, in Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the age of 55.
