Tinariwen, or ⵜⵏⵔⵓⵏ, is a Tuareg music group formed in 1982 in exile in Algeria, originating from Mali. They also spent some time in Libya. The band identifies as Tuareg, feeling neither Algerian nor Malian, and views the border between the two countries as a product of colonialism. Tinariwen's music is a blend of blues, rock, and traditional Tuareg sounds. The name "Tinariwen" translates to "empty place" in the language of the Berbers of the Saharan desert.
