Tindersticks is an English band formed in 1991, emerging from a group that originally came together in 1988. The founding members include Stuart Staples (vocals), Neil Fraser (guitar), David Boulter (organ & accordion), and Mark Colwill (guitar & strings), along with percussionist and drummer Earl Harvin and bassist John Thompson, who was later replaced before their first recordings. Throughout the initial phase of their career, they released six studio albums, two soundtrack albums, and numerous singles. After a hiatus from 2004 to 2008, the band's lineup was streamlined to include Staples, Boulter, and Fraser, supported by a new rhythm section of a drummer and a bassist, with occasional contributions from other musicians. Their second phase has seen a greater volume of output compared to their early years, even if it hasn't matched the commercial success of their initial work. Tindersticks is recognized as one of the most original and distinctive British acts of the '90s, setting themselves apart from the British indie scene and the Brit-pop guitar bands that dominated the charts. Their music is characterized by dense, intricate songs featuring literary lyrics, intertwining melodies, mumbling vocals, and a gently melancholic orchestration.
