**Tom Jones** **Born:** June 7, 1940 **Birthplace:** Treforest, Pontypridd, Glamorgan, Wales Tom Jones, OBE, is a renowned Welsh singer who gained fame in the 1960s as the frontman for a Welsh beat group. In 1962, he recorded four demo tracks in the football changing rooms at Pontypridd YMCA, known as the "bathroom session." By 1963, he was performing as Tommy Scott & The Playboys and recorded seven demos for a producer. The following year, under the name Tommy Scott & The Squires, he met Gordon Mills, who became his manager from 1964 to 1986. Mills capitalized on the popularity of the film "Tom Jones" (1963) by renaming him, and he also wrote and scored Jones' first major hit, "It's Not Unusual." By the end of the 1960s, Jones had established himself as a top Las Vegas headliner and was performing to sold-out venues worldwide. From 1969 to 1971, he hosted the internationally successful television show "This Is Tom Jones."
