He released his first album, "Closing Time," in 1973. Waits draws inspiration from early blues and beat poetry. He has also made a significant impact in the film industry, appearing in works by notable directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, the Coen Brothers, Jim Jarmusch, Terry Gilliam, and Robert Altman. Before his music career, Waits worked as a dishwasher and later as a pizza chef at Napoleone Pizza House in San Diego, California.
