Tom Zé, born Antônio José Santana Martins in 1936 in Bahia, Brazil, is a Brazilian songwriter and experimental composer known for his influence in the Tropicália movement of the 1960s. Following the military government's crackdown on Tropicália, Zé withdrew from the public eye to explore novel instruments and composition styles, staying true to the experimental and Dada impulses of the movement. He is recognized for his unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation, often using various objects as instruments, which contributed to his relative obscurity. In the early 1990s, Zé was rediscovered when one of his albums, Estudando o Samba (1975), was found during a visit to Rio de Janeiro, leading to him becoming the first artist signed to David Byrne's new label.
