Tom Zé, born Antônio José Santana Martins in 1936 in Bahia, Brazil, is a Brazilian songwriter and experimental composer known for his influential role in the Tropicália movement of the 1960s. Following the crackdown on Tropicália by the military government, Zé retreated from the public eye to explore novel instruments and composition styles, remaining true to the experimental and Dada impulses of the movement. His unorthodox approach to melody and instrumentation often involves using various objects as instruments, which contributed to his obscurity. In the early 1990s, Zé was rediscovered when one of his albums, Estudando o Samba (1975), was found during a visit to Rio de Janeiro. He subsequently became the first artist signed to David Byrne's new label.
