Tomasz Stanko was a Polish trumpeter and composer, born on July 11, 1942, in Rzeszów. He passed away on July 29, 2018, in Warszawa. Stanko was known for his contributions to free jazz and avant-garde music, and he was an innovator from the outset of his career. He was a member of one of the first free jazz bands in Europe, Jazz Darings. His collaboration with Komeda produced an album that is considered a masterpiece, while another album, included in the exclusive ECM Touchstones series, served as an important reference point for American jazz musicians. In addition to his work in jazz, Stanko was also an author of film and theater music and an improviser.
