Tommy Faile was an American bluegrass-country singer, songwriter, and musician, born on September 15, 1928, in Lancaster, South Carolina. He passed away on August 2, 1998, in Gaston County, North Carolina. Faile is best known for composing "Phantom 309," a song notable for its spoken lyrics rather than sung verses. The song charted twice on the U.S. country charts, reaching #9 in 1967 and #47 in 1975, and has been covered by numerous artists since its release. He began his career in local radio in 1946 and, in 1951, joined Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith's Crackerjacks as a bass player and singer.
