**Bio: Tone Set** Tone Set was a band based in Tempe, Arizona, active from approximately 1981 to 1983. The band was formed by members Galen Herod and Greg Horn, who met while working at KAET, the local public broadcasting station. Their early sound was characterized by a synthetic style, blending clean synthesizer sounds with tapes, which was evident in their first release, a 1982 cassette titled "Cal's Ranch." This cassette featured minimal vocals, with the exception of a line in "Wigglin Around In Middletown," and primarily included dialogue from various recordings, including a surreal segment from a local news broadcast involving an armed takeover. Other tracks, like "Time Travellers," incorporated lighthearted dialogue from "Rocky and Bullwinkle." The tape was recorded at their residence, known as "The Center for Advanced Studies," and released by Zia Records in Tempe. In 1982, Tone Set contributed the track "Out, Out, Out" to Placebo Record's "Amuck" compilation, while Galen Herod, under the name Happy People, contributed "Happy People" to the same compilation. By 1983, the band began incorporating more prominent vocals in their recordings, leading to the creation of their LP "Calibrate," which was also a home studio project.
