Tones On Tail was originally conceived as a platform for guitarist Daniel Ash to explore his more experimental musical ideas. The band emerged in 1982 with a self-titled 12" EP released on 4AD Records. Characterized by a light-hearted and psychedelic sound, Tones On Tail stood in contrast to the darker reputation of Bauhaus, from which Ash had come. Initially, Ash was joined by Glenn Campling on bass and keyboards, and after Bauhaus disbanded in 1983, drummer Kevin Haskins joined, transforming the project into a full-fledged band. During their brief existence, Tones On Tail produced some of the most inventive and playful "pop" music of the era before disbanding following a U.S. tour in late 1984. After the split, Ash and Haskins reunited with their Bauhaus bandmate in 1985.
