Tony Allen was a Nigerian drummer, composer, and songwriter, born on July 20, 1940, in Lagos, Nigeria. He lived and worked in Courbevoie, France, and passed away on April 30, 2020, in Paris, France, at the age of 79. Initially, Allen began his career as a studio engineer and became known for his drumming in various organizations. He played a significant role in pioneering the unique beat and vibe of Afrobeat music, which blends African polyrhythmic influences with the breakbeats and extended jams of American funk and R&B that emerged in Nigeria during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Throughout his career, Allen released solo Afrobeat and psychedelic funk albums and made notable contributions to the supergroup, among others.
