Tony Ashley was a soul singer and songwriter from Kansas City, known for his smooth vocals and impeccable style. He taught himself to play the piano and write music while attending Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Missouri. Working as a clothier in Kansas City, he gained popularity in the Kansas City, New Mexico, and Denver, CO areas. Ashley first recorded in 1967, with his debut single "All Along I’ve Loved You" mistakenly credited to "Tony Ashly," featuring the female trio, the Delicates. He later signed with a major label and produced subsequent singles, including "Just a Taste," which also featured the Delicates on backing vocals. Ashley co-wrote "Live and Let Live" for a white frat-rock band, released in 1968. Tragically, on December 15, 1969, while working at the President Hat Shop, he was mysteriously paged to the front of the store and was shot to death at the age of 29.
