Tony Bennett was an American singer known for his performances of traditional pop standards, big band music, show tunes, and jazz. He was born on August 3, 1926, in Astoria, Queens, New York, and passed away on July 21, 2023, in New York City. Bennett recorded his first two songs, "Vieni Qui" and "Fascinatin’ Rhythm," in 1949 under a pseudonym. In 1950, he began his long-time association with Columbia Records, adopting the name Tony Bennett. His first number 1 hit came in 1951 with "Because of You" (Columbia 39362). Over his career, which began in the early 1950s, he won a total of 20 Grammy Awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000. In addition to his music career, Bennett was also a painter, creating works that he signed as Anthony Benedetto, with many pieces on permanent public display in various institutions. He was the father of two children.
