Tony Williams was a prominent figure in the music scene, known for forming the band Lifetime after leaving his previous group in 1969. The original lineup of Lifetime featured guitarist John McLaughlin, who opted not to join Miles Davis to focus on his own compositions, and Hammond organ innovator Larry Young. After the recording of their first album, former Cream bassist Jack Bruce joined the band for live performances and the second album. However, McLaughlin departed to pursue his own career, and Bruce left to focus on his own projects. Young remained with the band for their third album in 1971, which showcased a larger ensemble. By the time of the fourth album, the personnel had completely changed, and the band's direction shifted to a less radical sound. Lifetime's original formation recorded two albums and a single called "Emergency," a McLaughlin composition that gained significant success in his second Mahavishnu Orchestra album. The band's sound was characterized by heavy distortion, unconventional lyrics, and erratic drumming, marking them as a cutting-edge fusion project for many listeners.
