Toots and the Maytals is a Jamaican reggae vocal trio formed in 1961, originally known as "The Vikings." The group made their first recordings in 1962 for Coxsone Dodd. They later changed their name to "The Maytals." Some sources suggest that the band name was finally changed in 1972 to "Toots and the Maytals" at the suggestion of their producer, following the band's first international hits. However, it appears that the name "Toots and the Maytals" was used on some releases in the 1960s.
