Toshi Ichiyanagi was an avant-garde pianist and composer born on February 4, 1933, in Kobe, Japan. He passed away on October 7, 2022, in Tokyo, Japan. Ichiyanagi studied composition with Kishio Hirao and John Cage, and piano with Chieko Hara, Bernhard Weiser, and Beveridge Webster. He graduated from the Juilliard School of Music and returned to Japan in 1961, introducing new musical concepts, including Cage's indeterminacy, to Japanese contemporary music. As one of Japan's leading composers, Ichiyanagi created operas, orchestral, chamber, and instrumental works. He was also known for his compositions featuring traditional Japanese instruments, such as the sho and gagaku ensemble, which were performed worldwide by his Tokyo International Music. Toshi Ichiyanagi was the first husband of an unnamed individual, and they were married from 1956 to 1962.
