Toshiyuki Miyama is a prominent bandleader who formed his own ensemble in 1950, initially named Jive Ace. The group later expanded to a big-band size and changed its name to The New Herd in 1958, with Kozaburo Yamaki serving as the arranger. The New Herd recorded with renowned jazz musician Charles Mingus in 1971 and toured worldwide throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Miyama led the ensemble for over fifty years, continuing to perform into the 2000s.
