T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo is a renowned band from Cotonou, Benin (formerly Dahomey), with "T.P." standing for the French phrase "Tout Puissant," meaning "All Mighty." The band was originally founded in 1968 as Orchestre Poly-Disco by members Melome Clement (founder, vocals), Bentho Gustave (bass), and Bernard 'Papillon' Zoundegnon (guitar), among others. In search of a soul singer, Bentho and Papillon recruited Vincent Ahehehinnou from Daho Jazz, a band that struggled to find success. After various changes in producers and financiers, the group transitioned to Orchestre El Ritmo before finally becoming Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou in 1969 after signing with a label owner. Over the next twelve years, they enjoyed successful records and tours. However, tensions arose in 1978 when Vincent Ahehehinnou left the group following disagreements with Adissa Seidou, who sought to diminish the role of Melome Clement. Vincent faced threats and voodoo rites in response to his protests. Although the band lost some notoriety in the 1980s, they continued to perform, with changing lineups over the years. T.P.
