T.P. Orchestre Poly Rythmo is a renowned band from Cotonou, Benin (formerly Dahomey), with "T.P." standing for the French phrase "Tout Puissant," meaning "All Mighty." The group was originally founded in 1968 as Orchestre Poly-Disco by original members Melome Clement (founder, vocals), Bentho Gustave (bass), and Bernard 'Papillon' Zoundegnon (guitar), among others. In search of a soul singer, Bentho and Papillon recruited Vincent Ahehehinnou from Daho Jazz, a band that struggled to find success in less favorable venues. After several changes in producers and financiers, the band changed its name to Orchestre El Ritmo before finally establishing itself as Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou in 1969 after signing with a label owner. Over the next twelve years, the band enjoyed success with numerous records and tours. However, tensions arose when Vincent Ahehehinnou left the group on May 28, 1978, following disagreements with Adissa Seidou, who sought to overshadow the late Melome Clement. Vincent's protests against these actions led to death threats and voodoo rites from Adissa.
