Tristan Murail, born on March 11, 1947, in Le Havre, is a French musician and composer known for his association with the "spectral" technique. He holds degrees in Arabic language studies and economics, and he studied composition at the Paris Conservatory, where he earned the Premier Prix in composition. Murail taught computer music at the Paris Conservatoire and composition at IRCAM in Paris. In 1973, he was a founding member of the organization. Since 1997, he has served as a professor of composition at Columbia University in New York City. He is married.
