Tubby Hayes was a British jazz multi-reed player, known for his skills on the alto, baritone, and tenor saxophones, as well as the flute and vibraphone. Born on January 30, 1935, in St Pancras, London, he began his professional career in his mid-teens. Hayes recorded with various groups, performing from 1957 to 1959, and led a series of recordings for notable labels. He performed at the prestigious Newport Jazz Festival in New York in 1961 and made several returns to the United States in 1962, 1964, and 1965. Unfortunately, his health began to decline in the late 1960s, and he passed away from heart failure on June 8, 1973, in Hammersmith, London, at the age of 38. His life and legacy were explored in the biography "The Long Shadow of The Little Giant: The Life, Work and Legacy of Tubby Hayes," published in 2015.
