Tuxedomoon is an avant-garde, electronic-oriented collective formed in San Francisco in 1977 by two electronic music students at San Francisco City College. Their music spans a range of styles, including new wave pop, jazz fusion, and experimental synthesizer soundscapes, often incorporating saxophone and violin, and frequently accompanied by performance-art shows. The band gained early traction in the San Francisco music scene, landing an opening slot for Devo in 1978 and releasing their first single, "Pinheads on the Move." The lineup has changed over the years, with key members including (keyboards, violin), (keyboards, other instruments), and (guitar). The band signed to the Residents' Ralph Records in 1979, which provided them exposure in Europe. After the release of their 1980 album, Half Mute, Tuxedomoon toured Europe and relocated to an artist's commune in Rotterdam, Netherlands, before eventually moving to Brussels. In 1982, they scored a ballet for Maurice Bejart, resulting in the album Divine. Following the departure of Reininger for a solo career in 1983, the band continued to evolve, releasing their most commercially successful album, Holy Wars, in 1985. After Tong's departure that same year, Brown and Principle remained as the only original San Francisco members, and multi-instrumentalist Ivan Georgiev joined for the 1986 album Ship of Fools.
