Tyrannosaurus Rex was formed in 1967 by Marc Bolan after leaving an earlier project. The acoustic duo, consisting of Bolan and percussionist Steve Took, signed a recording deal with producer Tony Visconti for release on EMI's label. Following a poorly received US tour, Took left to pursue his own music, and was replaced by another member. Eventually, Tony Visconti shifted his production work from Regal Zonophone to another label in the UK. After much urging from Visconti, Bolan abbreviated the group's name to T. Rex and expanded the lineup to a quartet by adding a bassist and a drummer.
