Hughie 'U-Bert' Crawford, known as U-Bert, is a singer who gained recognition on the Manchester cabaret and club circuit since the late 1980s. He performed alongside notable acts such as The Bygraves and Omar, and released several white labels under various line-ups. U-Bert's debut single, "Got To Make Sure," stands out as the most sought-after streetsoul white label, celebrated for its rarity and its embodiment of the genre with raw, bass-heavy D.I.Y. production and a socially conscious message of unity. This track emerged from Manchester's early 90s underground club scene, which embraced streetsoul, and was played by local DJs Hewan Clarke and Broadway on Sunset 102 FM, as well as at Blues dances in Moss Side and on local pirate radio catering to the West Indian community.
