U Brown, born Huford Benjamin Brown on June 8, 1956, in Kingston, Jamaica, is a renowned reggae deejay known for his impactful career that includes the release of eleven albums between 1976 and 1984. Growing up in Bond Street, Kingston, he lived close to Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studio, which influenced his musical journey. Inspired by U-Roy and other notable artists like Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Prince Jazzbo, and I-Roy, Brown began his career in the early 1970s on the Silver Bullet sound system, later moving to Sound of Music and taking over U-Roy's spot on King Tubby's Hi-Fi system in 1975. His recording career was launched with support from Winston Edwards and Yabby You, leading to a local hit in 1976 with "Starsky and Hutch." He subsequently released a series of albums produced by Bunny Lee and signed with Virgin Records in the late 1970s, which allowed him to perform frequently in the UK with the Unity Hi Power sound system. Brown returned to the spotlight in 1982 with the hit "Tu Sheng Peng," a version of Dennis Brown's "If This World Were Mine."
